Students

The Birth Cottage midwives are committed to preserving the art and science of midwifery for future generations of women. Both Adrian and Autumn serve as clinical preceptors for midwifery students.

Students at our birth center have, for the most part, completed the didactic portion of their education. We accept students from MEAC-accredited programs, CNM candidates who plan to practice in an out-of-hospital setting, and women developing their portfolios for certification by the North American Registry of Midwives.

Applicants for student placement should already posses a solid foundation of knowledge in the areas of midwifery and women's health, and be prepared to work in a busy, broad-scope practice. Placements last between 3-12 months.

We also offer limited observation hours for student nurses. Midwifery and nursing students enrolled in graduate-level programs have used the center as a research site, or for project-based work in women's health and community health.

Student inquiries should be directed to
:

Adrian Feldhusen, NHCM, CPM, 4 Prospect St. Milford NH 03055
Inquiries must include a resume of birth and/or healthcare related experience and letter of introduction.

Midwives Model of Care™
The Midwives Model of Care™ is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life events.

The Midwives Model of Care includes:

  • monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout
    the childbearing cycle
  • providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
  • minimizing technological interventions and;
  • identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention

The application of this model has been proven to reduce to incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.
